Review
Keyword Elite is a desktop software application that performs convenient but
extensive keyword research using live data analysis from several major search
engines. After reading the sales copy and some blog entries written by satisfied
users, I tried the software myself, hoping that it could serve as a
one-stop-shop for all my keyword research needs. Incidentally, the version being
reviewed here is version 1.3. The product is offered with free lifetime
upgrades.
Keyword research is a fundamental and vital part of any successful internet
advertising campaign. The problem when it comes to keyword research isn’t that
good tools are hard to find. In fact, there are many very good tools, free and
otherwise, out there that will allow a person to do virtually all the keyword
research they need. The problem, at least from my point of view, is one of the
amount of time it takes to conduct the research, and of the recurring costs
involved with subscribing to keyword research services. This is where Keyword
Elite shines.
Prior to Keyword Elite, a typical keyword research routine might go like this:
- Go to the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool and start typing in keywords and
keyword phrases, and export the results.
- Go through the results and make another list to plug into the Google tool.
Add the new list of results to the first list. Reiterate the process until
confident that a full list has been generated.
- Log into my Yahoo! account and repeat this process using a somewhat
simplified version of the full keyword list generated in step 2. Arrange the
list in order of estimated traffic per keyword. Export these results.
- Use the free Good Keywords tool to find additional keyword variations. Add
these to the master list.
- Use another tool to remove duplicate entries from the master list.
- Use another tool to format the master keyword list for Google broad match,
phrase match, and exact match.
- Use another tool to find common misspellings. Add them to the list.
- Use another tool to remove entries such as ‘free’, ‘hack’ etcetera.
- Manually add negative keyword to the list, such as ‘free’, ‘hack’ etcetera.
- Insert the formatted master keyword list into the Google tool and obtain
pricing info and estimated traffic info for every keyword on the list. Decide
which keywords to drop based on the cost being too high. Decide which to drop
based on the search volume being too low. Decide which to drop due to inadequate
relevancy. Produce a master Google keyword list.
- Insert the master keyword list into the Yahoo tool and obtain pricing info
and estimated traffic info for every keyword on the list. Decide which keywords
to drop based on the cost being too high. Decide which to drop based on the
search volume being too low. Produce a master Yahoo keyword list.
- Depending on my intentions (web page content keyword optimization, PPC
campaign setup, etc) log into WordTracker or Keyword Discovery accounts and
conduct competition analysis, etcetera, using the generated keyword lists.
Keyword Elite performs the majority of these functions automatically in a matter of
minutes.
As you can imagine, the above steps would take a considerable period of time. Keyword Elite saves me time
and lets me get back to the money-making side of my internet marketing projects.
Keyword Elite has been divided into five categories, or projects, as follows:
- Create a keyword list
- Analyze pay-per-click listings
- Select a keyword list
- Analyze keyword competition
- Spy on AdWords competition
When you open the program, you’ll notice that the interface is clean and
intuitive. The main screen permits the selection of any of five categories,
which the developers call “Projects”. Following is a run-down of what these
projects are all about, with my impressions of each.
Project 1 - Create a keyword list: If you need to generate a large keyword list,
it doesn’t get any easier than this. All a person needs to do is enter one
primary keyword / keyphrase and specify what search engines to use. From there
Keyword Elite handles the rest, generating an optimal keyword list of the size
specified, ranging from 100 to 100 keywords. The user can mine keywords from
Google, Yahoo, competitor’s meta tags, and others, including Misspellings. If
you have a WordTracker or KeywordDiscovery account, you’re in luck, because
Keyword Elite allows you to input your account information and obtain results
from these services as well. The only inconvenience about this stage of the
application is the time it takes to complete the queries. Generating a very
large list can take quite a while. However, I imagine the longer-than-ideal time
frame is necessary in order to prevent “banning”, a method used by search
engines to prevent automated keyword mining software from making too many
queries in too short a time and overloading their servers. Fortunately, you can
start working with the results even before the queries have finished executing.
The Report View is impressive. Some of the functions you can perform are:
- Perform custom sorts
- Remove entries containing specific words or characters
- Filter results by specific words
- Add words to the beginning of each item, such as ‘latest’, ‘quality’, etc.
- Add words to the end of each item, such as ‘review’ or ‘online’
- Automatically format the keywords for broad match, phrase match, and exact match
- Create and save keyword groups
- Import and export keyword lists
Project 2 - Analyze pay-per-click listings: This part of the program is also
very intuitive and flexible. You start by typing or pasting in the keywords for
which you would like to obtain data, and then selecting which search engines you
want to mine data from. Again, the results may take a while to obtain, but you
can go straight into Report View and work with the results being generated right
away.
The Report View displays a full spectrum of PPC information for each search
engine selected, including:
- Total results and searches
- R/S Ratio (Results to Searches Ratio)
- KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index)
- AdWords Clicks & Cost per Click for the top 3 positions for broad, phrase, and exact matches
- The current number of Campaigns for AdWords, Yahoo, Miva, and Enhance (this
helps you to gauge how competitive the niche is)
- Top bids for Yahoo, Miva, and Enhance
- Addresses of competing websites
Another great feature is that you can input the maximum cost per click for the
search terms for Google AdWords, and find out what your estimated ranking and
traffic would be for that bid amount. Finally, the interface allows you to visit
any of the listed competing websites with a single click. Virtually all
information you need for analyzing pay-per-click listings is right at your
fingertips.
Project 3 - Select a keyword list: This part of the program is a real cool
timesaver. Essentially it consists of a dictionary containing a huge number of
keywords and phrases. You type in a high-profile keyword, and one of the 40,000
pre-generated lists will be pulled up for you. You can format the keyword list
for broad match, phrase match, and exact match.
Project 4 - Analyze keyword competition: This part of Keyword Elite pulls up
information on the top 10 sites for any given keyword. In my opinion, this
section could be used also to find potential partner sites to back-link to. In
any case, the info that is provided includes keyword occurrences of the
following:
- Search volume for Google and Yahoo
- PageRank, word count, repeats, keyword density
- Page title, link text, alt text, meta keywords, meta description, bold text, and h1 tags
Not only does this information allow you to gauge how competitive the site is,
but it also gives you an idea of how you could optimize your own website to rank
in the top 10 for that particular keyword.
Project 5 - Spy on AdWords competition: One of the most effective ways to make
money using Google AdWords is to find out who the top money-earners are, and
then monitor their advertising activities. By emulating their activities, you
can enjoy successful advertising without all the time-consuming research.
Keyword Elite’s Project 5 allows you to do just that.
You start by entering the URL of a site you want to monitor, and associating a
set of keywords with that site. Keyword Elite will check if this site is being
advertised on Google. If so, it will report the following details:
- The competing site’s AdWords ranking for each keyword
- The length of time the site has been advertised (this is important, because if
the site has been advertising for a long time they are probably pulling in
consistent profits)
- The competitor’s ad title, description, and actual URL (the actual URL shows
you whether the advertiser is an affiliate of another site, again a very useful
feature).
Keyword Elite has a scheduler built in, so these checks on your competition or
sites you’re emulating can be made automatically at designated intervals. This
is another very nice feature.
Some of the additional features I like about Keyword Elite are its ability to
transfer information from one project to another. This saves the user from
having to export out of one project and then import the data into another. There
is an Options section which allows you to input your Google AdWords,
WordTracker, or KeywordDiscovery login information, if you subscribe to these
services. Lastly, a full help manual is included, and it is very well-written.
Summary
Keyword Elite is an excellent piece of software for conducting keyword research.
Since I came across it, it has become my primary tool for conducting keyword
research. I no longer use the myriad of tools I used to use, since almost
everything I need is contained in this one neat package. It doesn’t have the
extensive trend analysis capabilities of subscription services like NicheBot,
WordTracker, and KeywordDiscovery, but for most intents and purposes it has all
the functionality that the average internet marketer and SEO specialist will
need.
Intended Audience:
Affiliate Marketers, Internet Marketers, SEO Specialists, Web Designers, Web Masters
Pros:
- Simple and intuitive
- Saves most users from having to subscribe to expensive keyword services
- Extensive core functionality
- Flexible setup for mining keyword data
- An enormous time-saver over using conventional keyword tools
- Some decent bonuses are included
Cons:
- You need to manually select the “Report View” tab, even when the processes
displayed under “Threads View” are finished.
- A bit slow at times
